The short version
Your folders, shortcuts, notes, preferences, and uploaded photo stay in the current browser profile. This extension does not require a Nitoru account and does not synchronize that information with the desktop app, mobile app, or Google account.
Nitoru does not include advertising, behavioral analytics, or tracking pixels. It does not sell your personal information. Network requests are used for public release information, Chrome-managed updates, weather, and websites or email that you choose to open. The search box uses Chrome’s selected default provider and does not change that setting.
What stays in your browser
Nitoru saves folder names, shortcut names and addresses, chosen icons and ordering, your quick note, display name, tab title, layout and appearance preferences, and the weather location you choose. Your photo is decoded and, when needed, resized and compressed on your device before being stored. It is not uploaded to Nitoru.
From version 0.1.6, the installed extension encrypts its saved dashboard data, including your preferences, folders, shortcuts, note, and uploaded photo, with AES-256-GCM before writing it to Chrome’s local extension storage. Existing dashboard data is migrated automatically when it is first opened with this version. The encryption key is stored separately in this extension’s IndexedDB within the same browser profile, as a non-extractable Web Crypto key.
Encryption works automatically without a password. Someone able to use your Chrome profile can still open Nitoru and view its data; this is not a password vault or protection against a compromised browser or device. Nitoru cannot recover data if its encryption key is lost. Migration does not securely erase historical storage remnants or separate backups. Versions before 0.1.6 did not add Nitoru encryption. The separate local development preview continues to use unencrypted localStorage for its own preview address.
Nitoru searches the shortcuts in its own folders. It does not query Chrome’s full browsing-history database or read existing browser bookmarks, passwords, or the contents of other tabs. The optional Restore window action accesses recently closed window information as described below. The icon picker uses bundled artwork without requesting favicons from websites.
Small update records, such as available versions, cached public release notes, check times, and dismissed notices, are also saved locally so update checks and reminders can work across tabs and browser restarts. These operational records do not include your dashboard contents and are not encrypted by Nitoru. Temporary session records coordinate notices across open tabs and remember a notice dismissed for the current browser session. These records are not installation identifiers sent to a server.
Search using Chrome’s provider
When you submit a search in the installed extension, Nitoru calls Chrome’s Search API with your query and the current tab disposition. Chrome sends it to the default search provider selected in your browser. Nitoru does not choose, replace, or modify that provider.
Nitoru does not request autocomplete access, send keystrokes or partial queries to a provider, save a search history, or create a query log. Saved shortcut matches shown while you type are calculated locally from your Nitoru folders.
The local development preview cannot call Chrome’s Search API, so it does not submit web searches. It shows guidance to install the extension or use Chrome’s address bar. If the Search API is unavailable or fails in the installed extension, Nitoru shows an error instead of directing your query to a different provider. Preview behavior and localStorage are separate from the installed extension.
Optional weather
Weather is off until you enable it. City or postal-code searches go to Open-Meteo’s geocoding service; the selected coordinates go to Open-Meteo’s weather service. Those services receive the normal technical information needed to answer the request, including your IP address and browser information. Location results are based on GeoNames data. These requests use HTTPS and omit cookies and referrer information.
Nitoru does not request your device’s precise location. Your selected city and coordinates are saved in your browser preferences. Weather results are held temporarily in each open tab and reused for up to 15 minutes. Closing a tab removes its in-memory cache. Turning weather off stops weather requests and asks Chrome to remove the optional weather access.
Optional window restoration
When you click Restore window, Chrome asks for optional sessions and tabs permissions if they have not already been granted. These permissions allow access to recently closed sessions and tab addresses and metadata. Nitoru reads Chrome’s recent list only for this action, selects the most recently closed normal window, and reopens its supported page addresses directly in the window where you clicked.
The tab list stays on your device. Nitoru does not send it to a server, save the addresses or titles in its settings, query sessions from other devices, or monitor browsing in the background. Reopening a page makes ordinary browser requests to that page’s website under your existing browser settings, including that website’s cookies and sign-in state.
To prevent duplicate tabs and resume interrupted work, Nitoru keeps a small progress record in Chrome’s temporary session storage. It contains opaque session identifiers, a destination window identifier, and numeric tab positions and progress, with no page addresses or titles. Records are limited to recent windows and are cleared when the browser session ends or the extension is removed. You can remove restore access in Customize → General; Chrome also provides extension permission controls.
Release information and Chrome updates
Nitoru checks public release information on nitoru.com. After Chrome reports a pending extension update, Nitoru can request the release notes for that exact version. These requests omit cookies and referrer information and do not contain your notes, folders, shortcut addresses, photo, weather location, or a unique user or installation identifier.
Nitoru.com and its hosting and delivery providers, including Cloudflare, receive standard request metadata such as your IP address, browser information, requested path and version, and request time. That information is processed for delivery, reliability, and security under the providers’ practices.
Chrome and the Chrome Web Store handle extension installation and update delivery under Google’s practices. The public release feed supplies explanatory text; it cannot install executable code or bypass Chrome’s update mechanism.
Feedback and support
The Feedback & support button opens an email draft in your email application. It does not send a message automatically. The draft includes the extension version and space for your description; it does not automatically attach notes, folders, photos, search queries, or diagnostics.
If you send an email, the publisher and the email services involved receive your address and the contents and attachments you choose to include. That correspondence is used to respond to your request. Contact the publisher if you have questions about that correspondence or want to request its deletion.
Limited use of your information
Nitoru’s use of information received through Chrome APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use that information only to provide the extension’s visible features, such as your local dashboard and the window restoration you request.
We do not sell user data, use it for personalized advertising, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending. Data is shared with service providers only as needed to deliver the features described in this policy, or where required for security or by law. Weather contacts Open-Meteo only after you enable it.
The publisher cannot remotely access your local notes, folders, photos, or restored tab list. We do not give people access to that local information. If you choose to send information in a support email, it is read to respond to the request you initiated.
Your choices and removing data
You can edit or delete shortcuts, folders, and notes in Nitoru. In Customize, you can remove your uploaded photo or change your selected weather location. The storage display helps you see what is saved in this browser.
Local extension data remains until you remove it, remove the extension, or clear the browser profile. Uninstalling the extension removes its local extension data. Preview data can be removed through the browser’s site-data controls for the preview address. Removing data from Nitoru does not securely erase separate backups or copies you have made.
There is currently no account backup or export-and-restore feature in this extension. You can contact the publisher about privacy questions; the publisher cannot remotely read or recover your locally stored notes or folders.
Turning an optional feature off stops future requests; it does not delete information already received by that provider. External request logs and support correspondence are not controlled by the extension’s local storage. Providers’ retention practices are described in the links below. For correspondence held by the publisher, contact support@nitoru.com to request deletion, subject to any applicable legal retention obligations.
Changes to this policy
The date above identifies this policy version. If a future extension release adds data collection, synchronization, or a new external service, its policy and relevant in-product explanations will be updated to describe that behavior.
